What do free AI courses actually give you?
Free AI courses give you a self-paced introduction you can start any time, and a badge when you finish. Three free courses on AI agents show the pattern:
- Gen AI Agents: Transform Your Organization from Google Cloud takes 2.25 hours and ends in a Google Skills badge. It covers models, reasoning loops and tools, with hands-on practice building a basic agent. It is the last course in Google’s Generative AI Leader path for non-technical learners.
- Transform Your Everyday Business Processes with Agents (MS-4019) from Microsoft is free on Microsoft Learn. Its four modules go from prebuilt Copilot agents to building, managing and sharing your own in Microsoft 365 Copilot and SharePoint, without coding. Microsoft doesn’t state how long it takes, or whether you need a Copilot or Microsoft 365 licence to build agents.
- Agents and Workflows from OpenAI Academy takes 1.5 hours and needs a ChatGPT account. It teaches you to set outputs and boundaries, give agents context, review results and keep human oversight.
None of the three has a set start date or leads to an academic award. For the full list, see free AI courses compared by certificate and time.
How do free, funded and paid AI courses compare?
The free courses here are self-paced and end in a badge, the funded Irish courses run for a year and end in an NFQ Level 9 award, and the paid courses give a certificate of completion or a CPD e-certificate.

Are free agentic AI courses enough for a manager?
Free agentic AI courses are enough for a manager who needs to understand what agents can do and try building one. They fall short if you need a qualification, a schedule set by someone else or classmates.
Google Cloud’s course is written for non-technical learners and has you build a basic agent in 2.25 hours. OpenAI Academy’s course covers the management side: what to hand over, what context to give and how to check the work.
Compare them with Agentic AI and AI Agents: A Primer for Leaders from Vanderbilt University, a paid course on Coursera. In 6 hours it covers how agents work, designing reliable agents and separating real value from hype, and you build basic agents with custom GPTs. That overlaps closely with the free courses. What the fee adds is a Coursera course certificate, which is a certificate of completion rather than an academic award.
So free suits a manager who wants to judge agent ideas and talk to the people building them. For every agentic AI course on this site, free and paid, see the AI agents page.
When is a paid AI course worth the money?
A paid AI course is worth the money when it gives you something the free ones don’t, such as academic credits, set class times, in-person days or mentor-led sessions.
- Academic credits. The Postgraduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Professionals from University of Galway (with itag Skillnet) is a Postgraduate Certificate at NFQ Level 9 with 30 ECTS. Its projects are tied to your own company.
- Set class times. The Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Artificial Intelligence for Business from National College of Ireland runs over 1 year (3 semesters, as stated by the provider) with an indicative schedule of Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 18.00 to 22.00. It covers intelligent agents and process automation as well as data governance.
- In person over 2 days. Leading Human/AI Workforce: Humans First, AI Second from the Irish Management Institute is 2 days in person at the IMI Campus in Dublin for €1,499. You build working examples and leave with a 90-day deployment plan.
- Mentor-led sessions. No Code and Agentic AI from MIT Professional Education runs for 14 weeks online, with projects in KNIME and n8n, quizzes and mentor-led sessions. The fee is USD 2,850, shown in US dollars and not converted.
If you need none of these, paying mostly buys a different certificate. For a full master’s degree, see the guide to AI masters in Ireland.
Which paid AI courses stand out for managers?
University of Galway’s certificate stands out for a recognised award, National College of Ireland’s diploma for Irish funding, IMI’s course for short and in person, and Vanderbilt University’s primer for short and self-paced.
- Recognised award with credits stated: University of Galway’s Postgraduate Certificate, at NFQ Level 9 with 30 ECTS. The entry requirement is to be employed in industry in Ireland in or moving into management, with no programming or advanced maths needed. The September 2026 intake has started and the next one isn’t published.
- Funded in Ireland: National College of Ireland’s Postgraduate Diploma, at €700 for employed learners and free for unemployed learners under Springboard+, against €7,000 without it. It asks for a Level 8 honours degree (2.2 or higher) in STEM or business and 3 years’ relevant experience. Its Springboard+ intake for September 2026 is closed.
- Short and in person: IMI’s 2-day course in Dublin, at €1,499, gives an e-certificate specifying learning hours. Whether it counts for CPD depends on your professional body. The dates listed when it was checked were 22 and 23 October 2026.
- Short and self-paced: Vanderbilt University’s 6-hour primer for leaders, paid through the Coursera certificate experience or Coursera Plus; the price was not captured when it was checked. See other Coursera AI courses for comparison.
MIT Professional Education’s 14-week course started on 10 October 2026, and no later start date was listed when it was checked. To train a whole team rather than yourself, see the AI for business course options for teams.
Can you pay less for a university AI course in Ireland?
Yes. Springboard+ and Skillnet Ireland both lower the fee on some postgraduate AI awards, so check them before paying the full price.
Springboard+ is, in the HEA’s words, “free for unemployed participants and returners to the workforce”, and “those in employment typically pay just 10% of the course fee”. National College of Ireland’s diploma shows how that works: free if you’re unemployed, €700 if you’re employed, though its September 2026 Springboard+ intake is closed. The 2026 Springboard+ courses start between August and 31 October 2026, and the 2027 round had not been announced on 4 October 2026. See Springboard AI courses for the courses it covers.
Skillnet Ireland works through employers: “If you are employed within the private sector or commercial semi-state you can access Skillnet Ireland training through your company.” University of Galway’s certificate is run with itag Skillnet and costs €3,095 for itag members and €5,050 for non-members. The Skillnet courses page lists the network’s AI courses with their member prices, and the free AI courses in Ireland page sets out who qualifies for each scheme.
Do free AI courses come with a certificate?
The free AI courses here come with a badge rather than a certificate or an award. Google Cloud gives a Google Skills badge, Microsoft gives a Microsoft Learn trophy and module badges, and OpenAI Academy gives a course badge when you score 80% or more on the assessment.
The paid courses here give certificates of different kinds: a Coursera course certificate from Vanderbilt University, a certificate of completion from MIT Professional Education (10 CEUs) and an e-certificate of learning hours from IMI. Of the courses here, only the two funded Irish courses lead to an NFQ award, both at Level 9. Vendor exams and other kinds of AI certification are compared in their own guide.
Where should you start with no budget?
Start with Google Cloud’s Gen AI Agents course, then take the Microsoft or OpenAI Academy course that matches the tool you use at work. A first 10 hours could look like this:
- Gen AI Agents: Transform Your Organization (2.25 hours). Learn how agents use models, reasoning loops and tools, and build a basic one. Prerequisites aren’t stated.
- Transform Your Everyday Business Processes with Agents (MS-4019) if your organisation uses Microsoft 365. Microsoft asks for basic experience with Microsoft 365 services, doesn’t state a duration and doesn’t say whether building agents needs a Copilot licence, so check before counting it as free.
- Agents and Workflows (1.5 hours) if you use ChatGPT. Pass the assessment with 80% or more for the badge.
The Google and OpenAI Academy courses come to 3.75 hours between them. Microsoft’s path adds its own unstated time. For the hours left, the list of free AI courses shows which give a free badge or certificate and how long each takes.
Course facts checked on each provider’s own page between 3 Oct 2026 and 26 Oct 2026. Funding wording from the HEA and Skillnet Ireland.
